Full Biography
A graduate of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, Akansel received his Master's degree in Urban Design at The University of Michigan. As an urban designer, Akansel joined Meta Brunzema Architects NY, and worked on the Durst Organization’s plan for West Side Rail Yards, which includes 6.2 million square feet of residential, commercial and hotel development as well as a convention center expansion and a public park. Collaboration with government agencies, Hell’s Kitchen Neighborhood Association as well as Community Board 4, Akansel also worked on Hudson Yards rezoning and presented alternative plan at New York City Planning Commission. After having worked in local governance related projects at the United Nations Development Program, again in New York, Akansel returned to Istanbul as the Urban Design and Projects Coordinator of the Istanbul Konut A.Ş., Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Currently developing a national planning envelope and master plans for new developments sites in partnership with Environmental Simulation Center, New York, Regional Plan Association USA, and University of Michigan, A. Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning. Akansel is a member of Urban Land Institute.
